MDE is a development approach that advocates focusing efforts on the application model rather than on the code.
Modeling and task description is performed by business experts and thus management skills take precedence over programming skills.
Many benefits arise: decoupling business / technology, easy maintenance, scalability. etc.
The model, as an abstraction of the real world, becomes the real tool of communication between business experts, who then possess better functional knowledge of the application and technology experts, who areresponsible for software implementation.
The model serves as the project specifications for the entire team.
Traditionally for MDA (Model Driven Architecture) according to OMG (Object Management Group), we first create a model independent of the target platform, the PIM (Platform Independent Model) (1), which is converted (2) into a platform-specific model, the PSM (Platform Specific Model), which is adjusted as needed (3). Then, we automatically generate the associated code (4), we add specific business features (5) and it is finally deployed on the target platform for use and execution.
To modify the system, the application is synchronized with the PIM code (6) and the same cycle is repeated.
W4 invented MDE coupled with BPM with no need for code generation!
W4 eliminates the intermediate stages of PSM and code generation. Now it is only a matter of modeling, annotating and specializing behavior through targeted programming.
PIM is the W4 business model.
This model is interpreted directly by the BUSINESS FIRST Application Engine when running the application to orchestrate tasks and produce the user interfaces on the fly.
Development cycles are thus shorter and thus significantly increase agility.
The perennial problem of synchronization between code and model disappears; what you model is really what you get. It's WYMIWYG by W4!
The Model Driven approach significantly reduces the risks associated with technological projects and increases their success rate.
Gartner analysts see the merger of BPM and application composition using the MDE concepts as the beginning of a lasting change in the design of information systems that are more compatible with Web 2.0 and SOA (December 2009, "Composition and BPM Will Change the Game for Business System Design").
